By Rail

Matheran has earned incredible prestige and repute far and wide for its ‘Matheran Toy Train’; one of the four toy trains operating in India. This train i.e. the ‘Matheran Mountain Railway’ plies through the blossoming woods and the winding jungle tracks of Western Ghats and covers the total distance of 20 kilometers. Running between Matheran and Neral, the Toy Trains is the singular option to reach Matheran by train. To reach Neral from Mumbai you can get into any train headed to Karjat. The local train of Mumbai running on the central line from CST to Karjat will reach you to Neral. Besides, the Deccan Express and the Koyna Express also stop at Neral. From the Neral Station the Matheran Toy Train runs four times a day and generally this train goes full. The second class ticket costs about 35 Rs and the first class ticket charges you about 200 Rs. It is always better to book your tickets well in advance as there is always a heavy rush of people willing to reach Matheran and unwind in the lap of Mother Nature. Traveling in the toy train through the zigzag roads of the Matheran Jungles is undoubtedly a delightful experience. To reach Neral Railway Station from Pune tourists can board a train bound to Karjat and from their go to Neral using the Mumbai local running on the central line between Karjat and CST. Sahyadri Exp which plies between Kolhapur and Mumbai also halts at Neral.

By Road:

Matheran is situated about 90 kilometers from Mumbai and nearly 120 kilometers from Pune. Tourists generally prefer to reach Neral from Mumbai or Pune by train and then rent a cab from Neral to Matheran. A special cab will cost you around 300 INR whereas a seat in a shared taxi will cost just 60 Rs or so. From the Taxi Stop of Matheran one can either walk up to the main market or hire a horse and ride on his back through the quaint Matheran town. A horse will charge you about 200 Rs of rent. The second option is to avail the state transport bus running between Dasturi Park of Matheran and Neral and Karjat. Tourists can also use their private vehicle or rented cab for the odyssey to Matheran by road. The old Mumbai-Pune National Highway No 4 and the Matheran Hill Ghat Road will reach you to Matheran from Mumbai and Pune. As vehicles are not allowed in Matheran you will have to park your car or cab at the Matheran Car Parking and then use hand pulled carts or horses or just walk down the road.
